GRADE 8 INDEPENDENT NOVEL STUDY

Name:____________________

LEARNER OUTCOMES:

Use previous knowledge of authors, forms, and genres to add to new reading experiences.
To connect biographical information about authors, illustrators, storytellers, and filmmakers, to the work they have produced.
Decide on a way to present the information

2.4.3     Think about ways to improve the gathering of information
Task: You shall read a book of fiction for young adults. The reading level must be appropriate for you.  You will then complete an in depth study of that work.

Application:
1. Choose a novel to read.  A large selection of books is available in the library.  You may also bring a book from home.  Make sure it is a book you have NOT read before.
2. READ YOUR BOOK. This may sound obvious but there is a lot of work to complete that cannot begin until you have finished reading your book.

3. These activities are designed to be an independent activity, but if you require assistance at any time, please ask for it. Pay attention to the organization and overall appearance of your project. You will be graded on how it looks and how easy it is to read.
4. Compile your novel study. Your novel study project shall contain the following (some tasks may require more than one page):
_____Title Page

_____Summary and response for each chapter (or for around every 40 pages)

_____Setting Brochure

_____Illustrated Plot Diagram

_____Character Suitcase

_____Self-Evaluation

_____This handout
PART A – Title Page

You must include the title of your book, the author’s name, and your name. The title page should include artwork relative to your book. The artwork should be original.  It must be produced by hand.

PART B – Summaries and Responses

Write a summary and response for each chapter (or for around every 40 pages).  Be sure to introduce the characters near the beginning of the novel.
PART C – Setting Brochure

Using Microsoft Publisher, create a brochure advertising the setting of your novel.  Include the following:

Description of the location

Places to See

Things to Do

PART D – Plot Diagram

Create an illustrated plot diagram for your novel.  Choose approximately 10 main events for your novel and include them on a poster which includes appropriate picture(s).

PART E – Character Suitcase

Create a Character Suitcase for one of the characters in a story.  Make and pack a suitcase that one of the main characters would take on a trip. You must include:

A luggage tag that has the character’s name, address and destination written on it.  some of this will be made up.
Memorabilia to decorate the outside of the suitcase, such as bumper stickers or mementos from a previous trip.
10 items that the character would pack.  These items may be both tangible and intangible.  For example, Brian Robeson, the main character in Hatchet, packs a hatchet (tangible) and courage (intangible) because he needs both to survive.
A brief explanation stating why the character chose to pack each item.  It should be written from the character’s point of view.
PART F – Self-Evaluation
